I'm a world-class f*ckup. Or at least, I should've been.
At 16, I was a high school dropout with a drug problem, caught my girlfriend cheating with my best friend, destroyed everything around me in a rage, and got shipped off to Australia on a one-way ticket by parents who'd had enough of my shit.
Meanwhile, all my peers were getting their lives together, finishing school, making actual plans for their futures.
This only made me feel worse about myself.
Yet I could never join them... because the conventional path made me want to put my fist through a wall.
Conventional Path: Wake up, do what you're told, work for someone else until you die, repeat until dead.
But Australia nearly killed me first.
For 2 years, I bounced between drug houses, dodged bullets from deals gone wrong, and cried myself to sleep in filthy rooms that smelled like broken dreams. I hit rock bottom so hard I called my dad from a payphone, sobbing, begging to come home.
That's when something clicked in my brain. I decided I'd never feel powerless again. I found a boxing gym and threw everything I had into it. Won multiple matches. Earned Golden Gloves. Finally felt like I was becoming someone worth a damn. Then life hit me with the ultimate test:
My dad pulled me aside before a fight and said, "Dan, your mother has passed away." She was only 49. I spiraled again. Drugs. Alcohol. 18 months of complete darkness where I questioned everything. But deep down, I knew she'd want more for me than this pathetic existence.
